Friday Qualifying:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TRACK RECORDS FALL AT QUAKER CITY QUAKER CITY DRAGWAY, Salem, OH -- Shawn Bowen set a new Quaker City Dragway elapsed time record covering the quarter mile strip in 5.746 seconds to capture the number one qualifying position in the Federal-Mogul Dragster category. He just missed the track speed record of 244.91 mph, set by Randy Parks in 1996. Bowen crossed the finish line at 243.28 mph. “I carried the wheels and she (the car) drifted toward the wall. I had to peddle the throttle and it spun the tires through second and third gears. We need to soften it up a bit and we’ll be fine” said Bowen. He wasn’t the only record setter as Mark White set Federal-Mogul Funny Car track records in both elapsed time and miles per hour despite loosing a blower belt just before the finish line. White recorded a pass of 5.921 seconds at 240.68 mph. “It got a little squirly about half track but it felt good up to there” stated White. White was the crew chief for Randy Parks who won here last year in the Federal-Mogul Dragster category. Parks made the jump to Top Fuel Dragster this year and is competing on the NHRA National event circuit. Joining Bowen and White in top qualifying positions are Steve Ambrose from Woodhaven, MI in Competition Eliminator, Jeff Sexton of Fairborn, OH in Super Stock and Bert Morgan of Charleston, IL in the Stock Eliminator class. This should be the beginning of a record breaking weekend with temperatures in the low 80’s and a cool breeze expected to last throughout the event. Qualifying continues at Quaker City Dragway Saturday, July 11, with the Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Car scheduled to make two more qualifying attempts at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Gates open at 8:00 a.m. with racing begining at 9:00 a.m. SALEM, OH. -- Provisional qualifying results Friday from Quaker City Dragway, the second of six events in the 1998 NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series listing driver, hometown, state, vehicle, elapsed time in seconds, and speed in miles per hour. Saturday Qualifying Final:

BOWEN BREAKS OWN RECORD QUAKER CITY DRAGWAY, Salem, OH -- Shawn Bowen broke his own Quaker City Dragway track record of 5.746 seconds set yesterday with a pass of 5.695 at 244.60 mph. Today’s run not only gave him the track record in Federal-Mogul Dragster, but clinched the $1,000 top qualifier money from Winston. “The first run was all there, but it shook the tires on our second pass. I knew we had the number one spot so I shut it off. No reason to hurt the motor” Shawn commented as he and the Muffler Man crew prepared for Sunday’s Finals. The pole position in Federal-Mogul Funny Car went to the Fluke / Rydin Decal sponsored car of Marc White. White’s record setting run from Friday of 5.921 seconds, 240.68 mph held up for the number one spot. “It did what we thought it might” said White, “We tried some different things today and it smoked the tires. We’ll make some changes and be ready for tomorrow.” Bob Gottschalk has had a few wild rides this weekend. The Trick Titanium Federal-Mogul Funny Car used the entire lane as he qualified in the fourth position. The car got out of the grove on passes both yesterday and today but Gottschalk managed to keep it off the wall and from crossing the centerline, both of which would have disqualified the run. Steve Ambrose of Michigan will lead the Competition Eliminator class into tomorrow’s eliminations with Jeff Sexton and Jonathon Tarrance rounding out the top qualifiers in Super Stock and Stock respectively. Five hundred and forty-four racers made the trip to Quaker City Dragway for what has turned out to be a beautiful weekend of Federal-Mogul Drag Racing. Final eliminations begin on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. with Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Car scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Gates open at 8:00 a.m. SALEM, OH -- Final qualifying results Saturday from Quaker City Dragway, the second of six events in the 1998 NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series listing driver, hometown, state, vehicle, elapsed time in seconds, and speed in miles per hour. Sunday Results:

WHITE: FROM TOP QUALIFIER TO WINNER’S CIRCLE QUAKER CITY DRAGWAY, Salem, OH -- Marc White took the Fluke Rydin Decal Federal-Mogul Funny Car straight to the winner’s circle, never looking back from his number one qualifying position. White’s run of 6.118 seconds at 233.20 mph held off local favorite Tony Bogolo from neighboring Hamilion, Ohio. Bogolo’s Conrad Dahl owned Funny Car crossed the finish line at 6.560 seconds, at 207.40 mph. “We go into every race with the plan to take everything that’s there. This weekend worked out pretty well with the win and the top qualifier money.” voiced White in the winner’s circle. The team has a full schedule ahead of them with plans to hit five races in the next two months. Bill Reichert stole the win from Shawn Bowen in Federal-Mogul Dragster as Reichert and Bowen saved the best for the final. Bowen, who set the track elapsed time record in qualifying, left the line first only to have the Reichert’s Bar’s Leak dragster catch him at the finish line with a quicker 5.833 to Bowen’s 5.858. “I like to run those ones “ Reichert said of the close side- by-side race. “We do work on each others cars between races so to meet in the finals makes it a great weekend for both teams.” Jeg Coughlin Jr. brought out his Super Gas roadster along with brother John Coughlin and Jeff Taylor from the Jegs team who both ran Super Stock. Both Coughlins advanced to the semi- finals while Taylor advanced to the quarterfinals. A good weekend, however, the Jegs team may not think so as they are use to having at least one car visiting the winner’s circle. Jeg Jr. is currently second in the Pro Stock class which is contested on the national level in the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series. In early action, Gary Ward, in just his second year in a Federal-Mogul Dragster, brought the fans to their feet when his front suspension broke, punctured a hole in the fuel tank. “The tank let loose igniting a fire that sprayed down the side and into the cockpit. By the time I got it stopped, the Safety Safari was right there to put it out” s aid the uninjured Ward after the run. Nine national records were set this weekend at Quaker City: one in Competition Eliminator, five in Super Stock, and four in Stock. Setting both ends of the record were: Todd Brown, SS/TB 9.292, 143.32 Jerry Silveus, GT/IA, 10.682, 123.29 William Zaskowski, GT/I, 10.502, 124.32 Mart Jeltema, GT/D, 10.068, 133.94 Lewis Conkey, N/S, 12.453, 104.65 Tom Kasch, P/SA, 13.034, 101.13 Setting elapsed time records were: Ben Wenzel, D/S, 11.022 Bert Morgan, O/SA, 12.517
